Team5E publishes buying guides and gift guides for US homes, from Christmas decor and kitchen tools to heaters, storage and beauty gifts. This page explains exactly how we pick the products in those guides, which sources we rely on, and what we do not do. It works alongside our Editorial Policy, which covers our cost guides and calculators.
- Short version: we research products from listing specs, manufacturer information and public safety sources.
- We do not test products hands-on, and we never claim to have tested something we haven’t.
- No brand can pay for a spot, a ranking or a “best” label.
Where our product information comes from
Every pick starts with research, not a press release. For each guide we compare several products side by side using these sources:
- Retailer listings. Amazon product listings are our main source for specs such as size, weight, materials, wattage, capacity, included parts and current price range. We read the full listing, not just the title.
- Manufacturer pages. Where a brand publishes its own specs, manuals, warranty terms or care instructions, we check them against the listing and go with the manufacturer when the two disagree.
- Government and standards sources. For anything with a safety or performance angle we check public guidance, for example the FDA for cosmetics and food-contact items, NFPA and the CPSC for heaters, candles and holiday lighting, the TSA for travel items, and ENERGY STAR for appliances and energy use.
- Buyer feedback, read with care. We look at the volume and pattern of verified buyer reviews to spot recurring problems such as sizing issues, flimsy parts or short lifespans. We treat reviews as a signal, not as proof.
How we choose what makes the list
We start from a real need, such as “a stocking holder that won’t slip off a thin mantel” or “a space heater for a small bedroom”, and then judge each candidate on four things:
- Fit for the need. Does the product actually solve the problem the guide is about, for the room size, budget or person it is meant for? We say who each pick is best for and who should skip it.
- Clear, checkable specs. We favor products whose listing or manufacturer page gives real numbers (dimensions, materials, power use, safety listings such as UL or ETL). Vague listings rarely make the cut.
- Category coverage. A good guide gives you real choices, so we aim to cover different budgets, styles and use cases rather than listing eight near-identical items.
- Availability. We include products that are in stock and shipping in the US when we publish or update the guide. Prices and stock change often, so always check the current listing before you buy.
Where it helps, we add size charts in inches and centimeters, comparison tables and simple how-to steps, so you can check the fit for your own home before buying.
What we don’t do
- No hands-on testing claims. We do not run a test lab and we do not test products ourselves. Our picks are research-based, and our wording reflects that. If we ever do test something in person, the post will say so clearly.
- No paid placements. We don’t accept fees or any other payment to include a product, rank it or change a recommendation.
- No fake reviews or invented ratings. We don’t make up star ratings, testers or user quotes.
Affiliate links and Amazon Creator Connections
Team5E is free to read. Many product links go to Amazon, and as an Amazon Associate Team5E earns from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Posts with affiliate links carry a short disclosure near the top.
We also take part in Amazon Creator Connections. In this program some brands offer a higher commission rate for a limited campaign. If a product we feature is part of a campaign, we may earn more on it than on other picks. A campaign never buys a spot, a ranking or a “best” label: campaign products must meet the same criteria above as every other product, and we leave them out if they don’t. Full details are in our Affiliate Disclosure.
How often we update guides
Products get discontinued, prices move and specs change. We review buying guides on a regular cycle and refresh seasonal and gift guides before each season. When we update a guide we re-check availability and specs, replace products that are gone or no longer meet our criteria, and change the “Updated” date only when we make meaningful changes.
Who chooses the products
Guides are researched, written and reviewed by the Team5E Editorial Team, a small independent team. We may use AI tools to help with research and first drafts, but a person reviews and edits every guide and is responsible for it before it goes live. Learn more about Team5E.
