Our goal is simple: give US homeowners cost information they can trust and use. This page explains how we create and update our guides.
How we research costs
- We compare pricing from multiple public sources, such as manufacturer and retailer prices, published industry cost data and government data on labor costs.
- We show prices as ranges, not single numbers, because real costs vary.
- We explain what drives the price up or down, so you can understand your own quote.
- We note the location and the year our numbers apply to.
How we write
- Every guide starts with a quick answer, then gives the details.
- We use plain English and avoid jargon.
- We may use AI tools to help with research and drafting. Every guide is reviewed, fact-checked and edited by our team before it is published.
Keeping guides up to date
Prices change. We review our guides regularly and update the “Updated” date at the top of a page when we make meaningful changes.
Independence
We are not contractors and do not sell home services. Advertisers and affiliate partners have no say in what we publish. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
