Best Bath Mats (2026): Absorbent Memory Foam, Diatomaceous Earth and Cotton Picks

|
Best bathroom rugs: soft bath mat on a bathroom floor

Quick answer

The best bathroom rugs for most homes are machine-washable chenille mats with a TPR rubber backing, about 20×30 inches, like the OLANLY Chenille Bathroom Rug. If you want the softest step out of the shower, the Yimobra Memory Foam Bath Mat adds a cushioned foam core. If you hate damp fabric, the ZIKIBL diatomaceous earth stone mat dries fast and never goes in the washer. We also cover a 100% cotton tufted rug, a 24×60 runner for double vanities and a suction-cup tub mat for kids and seniors.

Best bathroom rugs: soft bath mat on a bathroom floor

A good bath mat does three jobs: it soaks up water, it stays where you put it, and it survives regular trips through the washer (or, for stone and teak, a quick rinse). A cheap mat that slides or goes flat after a month is not a bargain. We compared popular Amazon listings and picked ten of the best bathroom rugs and bath mats across every main material: chenille, memory foam, 100% cotton, microfiber, diatomaceous earth and a PVC tub mat for inside the shower. To keep water off a new rug, pair it with one of the best shower curtain liners. To finish a rental bathroom without drilling, pair your mat with a no-drill stainless steel shower caddy and a lighted makeup mirror for the vanity.

Our picks for the best bath mats

We grouped the best bath mats by job rather than by brand. Fabric mats (chenille, memory foam, cotton, microfiber) feel soft and go in the washer. Hard mats (diatomaceous earth and stone) dry on their own and get rinsed. A PVC tub mat is a different tool: it goes inside the tub or shower to stop slips where the floor is wettest.

1. OLANLY Chenille Bathroom Rug (20×30): Best Overall

Best Overall

OLANLY’s chenille rug is the easiest choice among the best bathroom rugs for a typical tub or shower. The high-pile chenille feels soft underfoot, soaks up water quickly and carries OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certification. If you like the chenille style, our chenille bath rug review looks closely at another popular option.

The textured TPR rubber backing grips hard floors, and the brand says it is built to outlast PVC and hot-glue backings. Machine wash cold and tumble dry low. It comes in many colors, so it is easy to match your towels.

Listing facts: Chenille top, TPR rubber backing, 30×20 in, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, machine wash cold, tumble dry low.

What we like
  • Soft, absorbent chenille
  • Grippy TPR backing
  • Washer and dryer friendly
  • Lots of colors and sizes
Keep in mind
  • High pile can be thick for low doors
  • Needs regular washing like any fabric rug

Best for: Most tubs and showers; the easy everyday pick

2. Yimobra Memory Foam Bath Mat (24×17): Softest Underfoot

Softest Underfoot

If you want a memory foam bath mat that feels like stepping onto a cushion, this is the pick. Yimobra pairs a coral velvet surface with a deep memory foam core; the brand says the velvet fibers pull water in while the dense foam keeps it from seeping through to the floor.

The underside is a diamond-tread PVC backing for slip resistance, and Yimobra says the high-resilience foam keeps its shape and resists flattening for 100+ washes. The listing offers several sizes, from a small sink mat up to tub-length options, so you can match the mat to your vanity. It is one of the best bathroom rugs for pure comfort.

Listing facts: Coral velvet over memory foam core, diamond-tread PVC backing, 24×17 in (other sizes listed), washable.

What we like
  • Plush, cushioned feel
  • Velvet top hides footprints
  • Diamond-tread PVC backing
  • Many sizes and colors
Keep in mind
  • Foam core can take longer to dry in humid bathrooms
  • PVC backing is not as long-lasting as TPR

Best for: People who stand at the sink a lot or want a soft step out of the shower

3. ZIKIBL Stone Bath Mat (Diatomaceous Earth, Grey): Best Quick-Dry

Best Quick-Dry

A diatomaceous earth bath mat is a different take: a rigid slab made from 100% diatomaceous earth that absorbs water and dries quickly, so there is no damp fabric to wash or smell. ZIKIBL’s mat has a textured surface for extra friction and comes with a rubber anti-slip pad to set under it.

Rinse or wipe it as part of your routine and let it air out. It has a clean, minimalist look and is one of the best bathroom rugs for anyone tired of laundry. It does feel hard and cool, so pair it with a soft rug at the sink if you like warmth underfoot.

Listing facts: 100% diatomaceous earth, textured surface, rubber anti-slip pad included, rinse or wipe clean.

What we like
  • No laundry needed
  • Dries quickly between showers
  • Anti-slip pad included
  • Clean, modern look
Keep in mind
  • Hard and cold underfoot
  • Rigid slab can crack if dropped

Best for: Modern bathrooms and anyone tired of washing fabric rugs

4. Madison Park Splendor 100% Cotton Bath Rug (21×34): Best 100% Cotton

Best 100% Cotton

For a hotel-style bathroom, a heavy cotton tufted rug looks crisper than shaggy microfiber. Madison Park’s Splendor rug is 100% cotton with a tufted top in a heavy 3000 GSM weight, a 0.5-inch plush pile and a 0.75-inch overall thickness, which gives it a dense, spa-towel feel.

It is fully reversible, so you can flip it to spread out wear. The brand says frequent washing is not needed: shake or vacuum it, then wash it separately on a low cycle when needed and avoid high heat to prevent shrinkage. There is no rubber backing, and the listing recommends a non-slip rug pad underneath, which we strongly agree with on tile. It is one of the best bathroom rugs for a natural-fiber, hotel look.

Listing facts: 100% cotton tufted, 3000 GSM, reversible, 21×34 in, 0.5 in pile, no non-slip backing (pad recommended), machine wash separately on low.

What we like
  • 100% cotton, no plastic backing
  • Heavy 3000 GSM tufted pile
  • Reversible for longer wear
  • Classic white hotel look
Keep in mind
  • Needs a separate non-slip rug pad
  • Heavy cotton takes longer to dry

Best for: Hotel-style bathrooms and people who prefer natural fibers

5. H.VERSAILTEX Striped Chenille Bath Mat Set of 2: Best Set of Two

Best Set of Two

If you want mats in front of the tub and the vanity, a two-piece set covers both in one order. This H.VERSAILTEX set includes a 32×20 and a 24×17 inch rug in a thick chenille with a stripe pattern, and the listing notes a Global Recycled Standard certificate. For a set of two in a waffle weave, see our waffle bath mat review.

It has a slip-resistant hot-melt backing. Wash separately in cold water, use only non-chlorine bleach, tumble dry low and shake to fluff. For a coordinated look, this is one of the best bathroom rugs to consider.

What we like
  • Two sizes in one set
  • Very thick, plush pile
  • Striped pattern adds color
  • Easy machine care
Keep in mind
  • Thick pile takes longer to dry
  • Stripes may not suit every bathroom

Best for: Covering both the tub and the sink in one buy

6. Ophanie Plush Chenille Bath Mat (20×30): Best Plush Pick

Best Plush Pick

Ophanie’s rug uses 1300 GSM high-density chenille with a 20 mm pile, blending yarns of different thicknesses for a textured look. The brand says it holds up to five times its weight in water, which helps keep the floor drier after a shower.

It ships rolled, so wash and dry it once before first use to bring back the pile and the grip dots. It ranks among the best bathroom rugs for a plush, spa-style feel.

What we like
  • Dense, plush pile
  • Very absorbent
  • Many colors and multi-piece sets
  • Machine washable
Keep in mind
  • Needs a wash before first use
  • Thick rugs take longer to dry

Best for: People who want a thick, cushy rug

7. LOCHAS Luxury Shaggy Bath Runner (24×60): Best Runner for Double Vanities

Best Runner for Double Vanities

Two small mats in front of a double vanity leave a gap of cold, wet tile in the middle. A 24×60 inch bath runner covers both sinks in one piece. LOCHAS uses an ultra-soft chenille pile that absorbs water quickly, with a non-slip TPR backing to hold the long rug in place.

It is machine washable; the brand suggests tumble drying on low or hanging it to dry. Put it on a clean, dry, smooth floor so the backing can grip. The same runner works along a tub, in a narrow bath or in front of a kitchen sink. Among the best bathroom rugs for long vanities, a single runner is the tidiest option.

Listing facts: Chenille top, TPR backing, 24×60 in, machine washable, tumble dry low or hang dry.

What we like
  • Covers a full double vanity
  • Soft, absorbent chenille
  • TPR non-slip backing
  • Machine washable
Keep in mind
  • Long rug needs a big washer drum
  • Check door swing before you buy

Best for: Double sinks, long galley bathrooms and walk-in showers

8. Gorilla Grip Bath Tub Shower Mat (35×16): Best Inside-the-Tub Mat

Best Inside-the-Tub Mat

The wet tub floor is often the most slippery spot in the bathroom. This non-slip bath mat for the tub uses hundreds of suction cups to grip the tub, plus hundreds of drainage holes so water flows under it to the drain instead of sitting on top. The pebble-textured hexagon top is soft on bare feet and made from BPA-free material.

At 35×16 inches it covers most of a standard tub floor. Machine wash it and air dry by hanging it over the tub edge. One important limit from the listing: use it only on smooth, clean, non-textured and non-tiled surfaces, and not on newly refinished tubs or shower pans. It is not a rug, but it belongs next to the best bathroom rugs in any family bathroom.

Listing facts: BPA-free, suction cups and drainage holes, 35×16 in, machine wash, air dry; smooth non-textured surfaces only.

What we like
  • Hundreds of suction cups
  • Drainage holes reduce standing water
  • BPA-free, soft pebble texture
  • Machine washable
Keep in mind
  • Not for textured or tiled tub floors
  • Must be lifted to dry, or mildew can form

Best for: Families with young kids, older adults and anyone who has slipped in the tub

9. Yimobra Fluffy Microfiber Bath Rug (24×17): Best Small Rug

Best Small Rug

Some fluffy rugs clump after a few washes. Yimobra says its elastic microfiber keeps its shape and texture through many machine washes, and the two-tone light gray and white look suits most bathrooms.

The hexagon TPR bottom is designed like small suction cups to hold the rug in place. In a 24×17 size, it is one of the best bathroom rugs for a small bathroom, in front of the toilet or by a single sink.

What we like
  • Keeps its fluff after washing
  • Suction-style TPR bottom
  • Compact size
  • Neutral two-tone color
Keep in mind
  • Small for a full-size tub
  • Light colors show dirt

Best for: Small bathrooms, sinks and powder rooms

10. MontVoo Thin Quick-Dry Bath Mat (17×27): Best Thin Bath Mat

Best Thin Bath Mat

MontVoo’s mat is a soft, thin diatomaceous earth style mat with a smooth surface. Water soaks in quickly, it resists stains, and a quick wipe or rinse cleans it, which is handy if pets track in dirt.

The rubber backing grips wet floors and blocks water from leaking through. Because it is thin, it fits under most bathroom doors, which makes it one of the best bathroom rugs for tight spaces.

What we like
  • Thin and door-friendly
  • Quick-drying surface
  • Stain resistant and easy to wipe
  • Resists pilling and shedding
Keep in mind
  • Not as cushy as chenille
  • Feels firmer underfoot

Best for: Doors with low clearance and homes with pets

How to choose the best bathroom rugs

  • Check the backing. TPR or rubber backing grips better and lasts longer than thin PVC or hot-glue dots. Cotton rugs with no backing need a separate rug pad.
  • Pick your material. Chenille and microfiber are soft and absorbent; memory foam adds cushion; cotton looks classic; diatomaceous earth and teak dry on their own.
  • Measure the space. Measure the tub, the vanity and the walkway, then use the size table below.
  • Check door clearance. Thick shag or a 0.75-inch cotton rug can catch a bathroom door; thin mats slide under easily.
  • Confirm care. Machine-washable rugs that can tumble dry low are the easiest to keep fresh. Read the label before you buy if you do not have a dryer.

The best bathroom rugs for families are usually two of the same rug, so one can be in the wash while the other is on the floor. For a bigger refresh, see our small bathroom remodel cost guide.

Bath mat size guide: match the mat to your tub and vanity

The most common mistake when shopping for the best bathroom rugs is buying one size for every spot. A mat should cover the area where you actually step out with wet feet, and leave a few inches of floor visible on each side so it looks intentional. Use these as starting points, then measure your own room.

Where it goesYour fixtureMat size to look forNotes
Outside a standard tub60-inch alcove tub20×30 to 21×34 inCenter it on the opening, not the whole tub length
Outside a walk-in shower32 to 48-inch shower door20×30 or 24×36 inWidth should match or slightly exceed the door opening
Single vanity24 to 36-inch vanity17×24 to 20×30 inLeave 2 to 4 inches of floor on each side
Double vanity60 to 72-inch vanity24×60 runner (or 20×59)One runner beats two small mats with a gap
In front of the toiletStandard toilet17×24 in or a contour matKeep it small so it does not bunch at the base
Inside the tubStandard tub floor35×16 to 40×16 inSmooth tub surfaces only for suction mats
Powder roomSmall half bath17×24 inThin mats suit tight door swings

For a double vanity, measure the full cabinet width and choose a runner 6 to 12 inches shorter, so the ends do not hit the wall or the tub. A 24×60 runner such as the LOCHAS bath runner fits most 60 to 72-inch double vanities.

Bath mat materials compared: absorbency, dry time, softness and care

The best bathroom rugs all balance softness against how fast they dry. The table below is a general guide based on how each material is built and what makers list for care; individual mats vary.

MaterialAbsorbencyDry timeSoftnessCare
Chenille (polyester microfiber loops)HighMediumSoft, plushMachine wash cold, tumble dry low
Memory foam with velvet topHigh on the surfaceSlower (foam core holds moisture)Softest, cushionedMachine wash gently, air dry or low heat

Microfiber shagHighMediumFluffyMachine wash; shake to fluff
Diatomaceous earth (stone)High, surface absorbs waterFastHard, coolRinse or wipe; air out; light sanding if the maker allows
Teak or bamboo slat matLow (water drains through)FastFirmRinse and stand on edge to dry; oil teak now and then
PVC tub mat (inside the tub)None (drains water)Must be lifted to drySoft, rubberyMachine wash or scrub; hang to dry

Memory foam bath mat vs diatomaceous earth bath mat

These two are opposites. A memory foam bath mat is the softest option on this list and feels warm under bare feet, which is why people with sore feet or hard tile floors like it.

The trade-off is drying: the foam core holds water, so in a bathroom without a fan it can stay damp for hours. A diatomaceous earth bath mat is hard and cool, but the stone pulls water off your feet and dries quickly between showers, with no washing machine needed. If damp towels are part of the problem, a heated rack from our best towel warmer guide dries them between showers.

If you shower more than once a day or have a small bathroom with poor airflow, the diatomaceous earth bath mat is the more hygienic pick; if comfort comes first, choose memory foam and wash it often.

Is a cotton or chenille bath mat better?

Cotton is a natural fiber that many people prefer for a classic, hotel-style look, and heavy cotton rugs like the Madison Park Splendor feel dense rather than shaggy. Chenille is usually polyester microfiber, which dries a bit faster and almost always comes with a rubber backing. Pick cotton for looks and natural fibers (and add a rug pad); pick chenille for grip and easy care. Both rank among the best bathroom rugs; the choice is about style.

Non-slip bath mats for kids and seniors: a safety checklist

Bathrooms combine hard floors, water and bare feet, which makes them one of the riskiest rooms for a fall. The National Institute on Aging advises placing nonskid mats, strips or carpet on all surfaces that may get wet, mounting grab bars near toilets and on both the inside and outside of the tub and shower, and leaving a light on at night (NIA: Preventing Falls at Home, Room by Room).

The same NIA guide warns against loose throw rugs, which is why the backing on a bath mat matters more than the color.

  • Two layers of grip. Use a suction-cup mat inside the tub (like the Gorilla Grip tub mat) and a rubber-backed rug outside it.
  • Check the tub surface first. Suction mats need a smooth tub. For textured or tiled shower floors, use adhesive anti-slip strips instead.
  • Replace worn backing. If the rubber has cracked, gone smooth or flakes in the wash, the rug no longer grips; replace it.
  • No curled edges. Thin, flat-edged mats are safer for walkers and canes than thick shag with a raised lip, so the best bathroom rugs for seniors are low-pile with full rubber backing.
  • Pad cotton rugs. A rug with no backing, like a cotton tufted rug, should always sit on a non-slip rug pad.
  • Dry the floor, not just your feet. A wet tile edge next to a dry mat is still slippery; one wide runner reduces the bare tile you cross.
  • For young kids, lift the tub mat after bath time so it dries, and check the suction cups each week; a mat that slides is worse than none.

For more steps older adults can take, see the CDC fall prevention pages (CDC: Older Adult Fall Prevention). The best bathroom rugs help, but they work best as one part of a safer bathroom.

How often to wash bath mats: a simple schedule

How often to wash bath mats depends on how many people use the bathroom and how fast the room dries. Even the best bathroom rugs smell musty if they never dry, because damp fabric is where odor and mildew start, so a busy family bathroom needs more frequent washing than a guest bath.

Mat typeBusy family bathroomOne or two peopleGuest bath
Chenille or microfiber rugEvery weekEvery 1 to 2 weeksEvery 3 to 4 weeks, and after guests leave
Memory foam bath matEvery week; dry fullyEvery 1 to 2 weeksMonthly
100% cotton tufted rugEvery 1 to 2 weeks; shake dailyEvery 2 to 3 weeksMonthly
Bath runnerEvery 1 to 2 weeksEvery 2 weeksMonthly
Suction tub matRinse after each use; wash weeklyWash every 1 to 2 weeksWash before guests
Diatomaceous earth matWipe weekly; air out after each useWipe weeklyWipe before guests
  • Shake fabric mats outdoors once or twice a week to remove hair and lint.
  • Wash in cold or warm water with mild detergent; skip fabric softener, which can reduce absorbency.
  • Tumble dry low or air dry flat, as the label says; high heat can crack rubber backing.
  • Rinse stone and diatomaceous mats and let them air dry; lightly sand stains only if the maker allows.
  • Hang fabric mats over the tub edge after a long shower so they dry between uses.

On the counter, our wooden soap tray review shows how a small riser keeps bottles out of puddles, which also keeps the floor drier.

Hotel-style bathroom setup: mats, towels and curtain that match

Hotel bathrooms look calm because everything is in the same small color family and the textiles are generous. The best bath mats for this look are heavy cotton or chenille in white, cream or gray. You can copy the look in an afternoon:

  • One color family. Choose white or a soft neutral for the mat, towels and shower curtain, then add one accent (wood, brass or a plant).
  • Match the texture. A heavy cotton tufted rug pairs with plush cotton towels; a waffle mat pairs with waffle towels and a waffle shower curtain. See our best bath towel sets for towels that match.
  • A floor-length curtain. A long fabric shower curtain hung high makes the room feel taller; our best shower curtains guide covers waffle, linen and extra-long options.
  • Two mats, two jobs. A soft rug outside the tub for comfort, a runner at a double vanity for coverage.
  • A bath ritual tray. Finish with a few spa touches from our best luxury bath soaks guide and a candle or diffuser.

How we chose these bath mats

We did not test these mats hands-on. To find the best bathroom rugs and bath mats, we researched popular Amazon listings for bath mats, bath rugs, bath runners and tub mats, then compared what each listing states about material, backing type, sizes and care instructions. We chose one pick per need (soft, quick-dry, cotton, runner, tub, small and thin) so the list covers different bathrooms instead of ten versions of the same rug.

Before this update we re-checked that each listing was live and in stock. Listings change, so confirm size and care details on Amazon before you buy, and we refresh this guide when they change.

Best bathroom rugs and bath mats: frequently asked questions

What are the best bath mats that do not slip?

Mats with TPR or rubber backing grip best on tile. The OLANLY chenille rug, the LOCHAS runner and the Yimobra microfiber rug all use TPR backing, and the ZIKIBL stone mat comes with a rubber pad. Inside the tub, use a suction-cup mat on smooth surfaces only.

How often should you wash bath mats?

Wash fabric bath mats every week in a busy family bathroom, every one to two weeks for one or two people, and about monthly in a guest bath. Shake them out between washes and let them dry fully after each shower.

Is a memory foam bath mat worth it?

A memory foam bath mat is worth it if comfort comes first, for example if you stand at the sink a lot or have hard tile. It dries slower than chenille, so wash it often and hang it to dry in humid bathrooms.

Are diatomaceous earth bath mats worth it?

A diatomaceous earth bath mat suits people who want a fast-drying mat with no laundry. It feels hard and cool, so pair it with a soft rug at the sink if you like warmth underfoot. Wipe it weekly and let it air out.

What size bath mat should I get for a double vanity?

For a 60 to 72-inch double vanity, a 24×60 bath runner covers both sinks in one piece. Choose a runner 6 to 12 inches shorter than the vanity so it does not touch the walls.

What is the safest bath mat for seniors?

Use a suction-cup mat inside a smooth tub plus a low, rubber-backed rug outside it, and add grab bars. The National Institute on Aging recommends nonskid mats or strips on every surface that may get wet.
